Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is a member of the grass family Poaceae. It is naturally diploid with seven chromosomes and an estimated genome size of 2.7Gb. Ryegrasses are native to Eurasia, but nowadays cultivated worldwide. Perennial ryegrass is widely planted as forage for livestock production in agriculture. Moreover, it is a popular turf grass, especially in temperate regions where it remains green all winter.
